ARNO x Ritter Sport: Instore Experience

 

What is the Ritter Sport Instore Experience?

 

The project combines the well-known square chocolate bars of Ritter Sport with a structured in-store brand presentation. The concept and design were developed to support product visibility and brand recognition directly at the point of purchase. The permanent display received the POPAI D-A-CH Award 2022.

 

Both Alfred Ritter GmbH & Co. KG and ARNO GmbH share a strong commitment to sustainability and climate protection. This common approach is reflected in the project, with a focus on material quality, durability and responsible design choices.

 

Project objectives:

  • Increase product visibility at the point of sale through a clearly structured display system
  • Support brand recognition by translating core brand values into a physical retail environment
  • Enable interactive product exploration using touch-free Airswipe technology
  • Communicate sustainability and cocoa sourcing in a comprehensible and accessible way
  • Ensure long-term usability through durable materials and a permanent installation

Interactive Airswipe technology

 

The Ritter Sport Instore Experience is an interactive retail concept conceptualised by PickMeUp Communications (Hamburg) and produced by ARNO. Its objective is to reduce the distance between customers and products through interactive engagement and to encourage exploration of different flavours.

The display head enables touch-free control via Airswipe gestures. Airswipe is a form of contactless human–machine interaction that enables gesture-based control in public and retail environments, particularly where hygiene, durability and accessibility are key considerations. In this project, the interaction illustrates the journey of the cocoa tree from fruit to chocolate and supports the communication of Ritter Sport’s approach to fair cocoa sourcing and product quality at the point of sale.

A key challenge of the project was integrating the interactive display concept into existing retail environments. The design needed to balance visual presence with functional requirements to support product selection and presentation.

The technical implementation required precise planning and coordinated production to ensure reliable operation of the interactive elements and a consistent visual appearance of the display system.
